Ten years after United Airlines first introduced Polaris business class to replace outdated side-by-side seating, the carrier has unveiled an updated version dubbed 'Polaris Elevated.' Announced in March 2026, this new product represents a significant upgrade with suite-style seats that feature closing doors for enhanced privacy, alongside updated technology and upscale amenities. The rollout is currently underway, though passengers on most routes will still encounter the first-generation Polaris seats unless they are flying specific aircraft from Houston or San Francisco.
The airline completed the installation of its first-generation Polaris across almost its entire wide-body long-haul fleet in 2023. These seats generally feature a 1-2-1 or 1-1-1 layout, providing direct aisle access for every passenger. While seat widths range from approximately 20 to 22 inches and recline into lie-flat beds measuring between 76 and 78 inches, the new Polaris Elevated seats on select Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners offer a 21-inch width and 78-inch beds. A key differentiator for the new cabins is the inclusion of closing doors and an updated interior design featuring textured shells, faux-marble finishes, and caramel-toned woodgrain paneling.
Currently, the Polaris Elevated suites are found on newly delivered Boeing 787-9 aircraft. These planes operate a limited number of routes from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to London Heathrow, Singapore Changi, and Sydney, with the latter service starting in December 2026. Beginning in October 2026, United will also deploy these aircraft from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston to Tokyo Narita, São Paulo, and Sydney. The airline expects to have 30 of these next-generation aircraft in service by the end of 2027. Additionally, rows 1 and 9 on these new Dreamliners feature 'Studio' suites, which offer extra space, larger 27-inch entertainment screens, and premium soft amenities such as Laurent-Perrier Champagne and caviar.
Despite the introduction of the new product, United maintains a consistent 'soft product' across its Polaris cabins. Passengers can expect Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, Brooks Brothers amenity kits, Perricone MD skincare products, and Meridian noise-canceling headphones. Those booking the new Studio suites receive additional perks, including higher-quality pajamas with hoods and special Plasma+ amenity kits. The airline also operates a network of Polaris Lounges at major hubs like Denver, Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington Dulles, and San Francisco, offering dining, shower suites, and quiet areas to eligible travelers.
United offers three fare tiers for Polaris business class: Base, Standard, and Flexible. While Base fares are cheaper, they exclude free seat selection, flight changes, and Polaris Lounge access, though onboard services remain the same. Standard and Flexible fares include lounge access and two free checked bags. For travelers redeeming miles, United MileagePlus is often the most effective program due to dynamic pricing and potential discounts for elite members or co-branded credit card holders. Air Canada Aeroplan remains an alternative option, though award availability can be limited compared to United's own inventory.
