The Capital One Venture Rewards card offers a straightforward way to earn travel rewards. For a $95 annual fee, cardholders earn at least 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, avoiding the need to track rotating bonus categories. The card also includes travel perks and multiple ways to redeem miles.
New cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 during the first three months after opening the account. The offer also includes a $300 credit for hotel and vacation-rental bookings through Capital One Travel. The credit must be used for eligible bookings within the first year of card membership.
For everyday purchases, the card earns 2 miles per dollar, whether the spending is on groceries, fuel or household purchases. Bookings made through Capital One Travel earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars.
The travel portal can therefore provide additional rewards. A $1,000 hotel booking made through Capital One Travel would earn 5,000 miles, compared with 2,000 miles for a standard purchase. However, travelers should compare prices and benefits before booking, since reservations through third-party portals may not qualify for hotel loyalty points or elite-status benefits.
The card also includes travel-related benefits. It provides up to a $120 statement credit every four years for an eligible Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, charges no foreign transaction fees and offers protections such as rental-car collision damage waiver and travel accident insurance. Cardholders can also enroll in complimentary Hertz Five Star status, with benefits that may include a broader vehicle selection and the ability to skip the rental counter at certain locations.
For a simpler redemption option, miles can be used to cover eligible travel purchases made with the card within 90 days. Each mile is worth 1 cent through this method, which can be used for flights, hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars. Although this value is lower than the potential value available through travel partners, it avoids the need to search for award availability.
More experienced users can transfer miles to participating airline and hotel loyalty programs. Most airline partners offer a 1:1 transfer ratio, though ratios can vary, so the terms should be checked before moving rewards. Transfers may provide greater value, but they require familiarity with loyalty programs and should generally be made only when a specific redemption has been identified.
For beginners, the simplest approach is to use the card for everyday spending, take advantage of the welcome offer and compare direct bookings with Capital One Travel. As familiarity with travel rewards grows, transferring miles to partners can offer another way to increase their value.
